Off Air?? Bring Signing Time Back!

I've noticed a lot of activity lately from people looking for the show on PBS and trying to figure out why it was taken off. To these people, I would certainly recommend they contact the people at Signing Time since this community is not affiliated with the company in any way. Let them know they're missed. Of course, without the corporate sponsorship, I'm not sure anything would change, so if anyone knows of a company that would back them, it might help things along.

Otherwise, also know to check your local library, eBay, Craigslist, Movie Trading Co., and various other outlets (including the Signing Time website or Amazon) for the DVDs. The DVDs actually have bonus material and are great learning tools.

I am so glad we found Signing Time and were able to use it with our daughter. She's almost three and still signs, but her vocabulary is off the charts and her speech is excellent. We have the entire set of videos, mostly because we never even knew it was on PBS. Once we discovered it was on PBS, we found it was only aired early Sunday mornings here (not exactly the best time for us since it was on before she was even out of bed). Owning the videos has certainly been a blessing, since she still asks to watch it a couple times a week.

As always, feel free to leave comments here, since I'm certain ST is actually aware of the community, but contacting them directly is quite probably more effective.

Happy signing!

Sad News for PBS Viewers

Rachel announced recently in her blog that Signing Time has not received the backing from major sponsors it needs to continue being aired on PBS stations. As of October 1, 2008, PBS will no longer have Signing Time on the schedule.

To be honest, we never watched it on PBS here since it was only on once a week and at such an odd time. I didn't even know it was on PBS anywhere until we went to see Rachael and Leah last year at a free concert in Abilene.

Children's songs in ASL

I'd like to learn some children's songs (like "The Wheels on the Bus" and stuff like that) in ASL so I can show Violet, 12 months.  Does anyone know of any resources?

I found this CD-rom, but I can't find any reviews of it: http://www.harriscomm.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=35_101&products_id=17792&osCsid=d9f366baee0

It's kind of pricey.  And without reviews, I'm hesitant because it might be low quality.  What do you think?

The next four volumes of Signing Time, Series Two are almost here! Guess the correct titles of these new shows and you'll be entered in a drawing to win a set of Volumes 4-7 (valued at $78.99). This set also includes a Music CD with songs from Vols. 1-7 of Series Two.

Here's how to play:

Go to the contest, guess the right title from a list of options underneath each picture, and enter your choices now. This contest ends November 12 at 10 am MST. The winner will be randomly drawn from entries that guess all four titles correctly.

My Opinion of Series 2

I tend to agree with sm00bs. I think Rachel is just coming across as "I'm doing a children's show." I HATE the intermediate "times" - "Counting Time", "Story Time", and most of all "Hopping Time." HOPPING! Is that to fulfill some mandate that children have to move for a certain amount of time in each half hour?
That said, Jack loves the new series. Especially Happy Birthday. He keeps saying and signing it, especially when he sees candles. He signs Happy Birthday, not candle. And now, he can sign cake.
Actually, Jack's signs have exploded in the past week. He can do a lot of the colors, thanks to Box of Crayons, and to me sitting and watching with him.

Sorry, I didn't find out about this until just now. I know there's plenty of time before the sale still, but I don't know how many people will see it.

We've been showing Bit the Baby Signing Time dvds for about 4-5 months now. She absolutely loves them. They are the only videos/show she really gets excited about. When I tell her I'm going to put it on she starts swinging her arm out and back from her chest...I think that's a "proto" sign...she does it during the theme song (maybe it's her version of baby or signing). She's starting to do more with her hands and she learned to say "ba" (ball) from vol. 2. She says it all the time.

I think she might actually be using some signs by the end of the year. We also have 3 Signing Time DVDs but they are longer and more complex, with less music, so we haven't watched them much yet. I think they'll be good when she's older. (Hopkins is weird in ST. I miss the cute Hopkins from BST. He's Bit's favorite part.)

I'm thinking about getting the board books for sign review b/c I'm not a flash card person. http://www.signingtime.com/index.php?cPath=29
